Specific Treatment Considerations

Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

A comprehensive oral examination should be completed on all patients. This may require the assistance of family members if the patient is unable to provide accurate information. A summary of the dental findings and specific treatment recommendations should be provided to the patient or caregiver and physician when appropriate.

The dental treatment plan should be formulated according to accepted dental practice and take into consideration the following factors:

  • patient’s mental status
  • level of understanding and communication
  • consent issues
  • psychological needs
  • physical limitations
  • accessibility issues
  • behavior management
  • medical conditions
  • potential drug interactions
  • antibiotic prophylaxis
  • patient’s living environment
  • financial considerations
